This Labor Day Weekend, MCSO Focused on Traffic Safety

August 30, 2024

The Labor Day holiday weekend is officially upon us.  The unofficial end of summer is historically a busy weekend on roadways all across the country as well as Marshall County.  With good weather in the forecast, many people will be headed out for one last weekend of camping or boating before fall weather moves in.  In addition to those traveling for recreation, there will be plenty of people dressed in their cardinal and gold or black and gold headed to Ames or Iowa City.  Both the Hawkeyes and Cyclones host season opener games at home on Saturday.  According to statistics and predictions from AAA, Labor Day holiday travel is expected to be up almost 10% from last year and airports are gearing up for what is expected to be the highest number of Labor Day passengers in recent history.  All of this means that you can expect a lot of traffic on the roadways.

The Marshall County Sheriff's Office will be one of many agencies all across the country that will have extra personnel out working and focused on traffic safety on this busy weekend.  MCSO Deputies will be out working extra traffic enforcement overtime using grant funding provided by the Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau.  Deputies will be looking for all traffic violations and especially those that are the leading contributors to crashes that often result in serious injuries or death.  Those violations include but are not limited to: Impaired Driving, Distracted Driving, Speeding, and Seat Belt/Child Safety Seat use.

If your celebration or activities include alcohol consumption, please make sure to have a sober driver or utilize ride-share or taxis where available.  Once you are in the car-buckle up, everyone in every seating position.  Also as a reminder, if you see an emergency vehicle, tow truck, maintenance vehicle, or any vehicle with emergency lights or four-way flashers on the shoulder of the road the law requires that you move over or slow down if you are unable to change lanes.

As of today, 209 people have died in crashes on Iowa roadways.  While at first glance, that number may not seem that big when compared to the 3.2 million population of Iowa- remember that those 209 people are not just a number but someone's family member or friend.  The Marshall County Sheriff's Office wants everyone to have a fun and safe holiday weekend.  Make traffic safety part of your driving plans and help save lives on our roadways.
