East of Ferguson, Iowa - Marshall County - Additional information on the investigation into a vehicle fire that occurred East of Ferguson, Iowa on August 12, 2009 in Marshall County.
The Marshall County Sheriff's Office, Marshall County Medical Examiner's Office and the Office of the Iowa State Medical Examiner continue their investigation into the fire of a Dodge Mini-Van that occurred in rural Marshall County on August 12th, 2009.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered a Dodge Mini-Van fully engulfed in flames resting in a small creek north of 290th Street and approximately 2 miles east of Ferguson, Iowa. Upon further investigation the remains of a person were found inside the vehicle.
Earlier today (August 13th, 2009), an autopsy was performed by the Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office to begin the forensic process of determining the cause of death and the identification of the individual. Authorities believe they know who the subject is, however, NO positive confirmation was possible to this point in the investigation. DNA samples were taken and will be one of several sources used in determining who the victim was.
The investigation continues into this incident at this time. Pending the results of the DNA sampling along with further gathering of evidence, official confirmation of the identity of the victim will come from the Marshall County Medical Examiner's Office
