2500 Block S. Center Street - On Friday, September 14, 2012, a Traffic Safety Checkpoint was held by local law
enforcement agencies in conjuction with the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB). This event was held in the 2500 block of South Center Street (Highway 14) and in the Marshalltown Mall parking lot. During the 4 hour event, there were 116 vehicle contacts made by officers. These contacts invovlved checking license, registration, insurance, as well as equipment checks on the vehicle. These checks included: headlights, taillights, brakelights, wipers, horns, tires, and turn signals. Officers did issue 24 citations and gave 35 warnings during the event.
There were a total of 24 officers from various agencies that participated in the checkpoint. Those agencies that were present were: Marshalltown Police Department, Marshall County Sheriff's Office, Marshalltown K-9 Unit, Tama County Sheriff's K-9 Unit, Staff from GTSB, MIDTF, DNR Enforcement, and the Marshall County Attorney's office. Every stop lasted less than 5 minutes during the event. The ratio of cars pulled into the checkpoint was every 5th car than every 3rd car between 7:15-8:00 pm. There were free traffic safety educational items given out on most inspections. This would include: pens, pencils, cups, t-shirts, coloring books, keychains, etc. Also 13 car seats were checked by certified car seat technicians along with safety seat educational information handed out as well.
The purpose of the checkpoint was not to write tickets but to promote traffic safety awareness and education. We want to thank everyone for their time and cooperation during this event.
