On Thursday, November 27, 2025, at 12:31 PM Deputies were dispatched to the 3300-Mile of 130th Street in Marshall County, Iowa for a report of a disturbance with a family member that displayed a handgun.  Before deputies arrived, the family member left the property in a vehicle and was believed to be traveling to Marshalltown, Iowa.

At approximately 1:04 PM, the family member’s vehicle was observed entering the Iowa Veterans Home property, 1301 Summit Street, Marshalltown.  Iowa Veterans Home Security was notified for safety protocol as Marshalltown Police Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle.

The family member was identified as Jorell Handorf, age 23, of Marshalltown.  After multiple attempts to establish communications with Mr. Handorf it was determined he had tragically died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mr. Handorf was not an Iowa Veterans Home resident or employee.  This incident remains under investigation.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Marshalltown Police Department, Marshalltown SWAT, State Center Police Department, Unity Point Health Ambulance Service, Marshalltown Fire Department, and the Marshall County Medical Examiner’s Office.
