Careers Civil Service Deputy Sheriff

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for Deputy Sheriff. The Civil Service Entrance examination for Deputy Sheriff will be open until a certified list is compiled. This list will be utilized for the purpose of filling vacant deputy sheriff positions for a period not to exceed two years from the test date. The application period will be open for a minimum of 30 days from the time of posting.

Physical agility and written testing will be scheduled by appointment. A study guide may be purchased for the written test and is available upon request. Applicants successfully completing physical and written testing will continue to the background investigation and interview portion.

Applications are available at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office or online. A completed employment packet must be submitted to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office to be eligible to participate in the testing process. Electronic submissions will be accepted, however, you must bring the original packet for submission at the time of testing.

Your application must be filled out completely and include the following:

Certified copy of your birth certificate
High School and/or College Transcripts
Military form DD-214 (if applicable)
ILEA Law Enforcement Officer Certification (if applicable)

Your application will not be considered further if any of these requirements are not included. Exception-If waiting for official documents, note in appropriate area on the application.

Starting wage beginning July 1st, 2022 for this position is $53,350 per year. After being employed one year, Iowa certified candidates will receive a $3,000.00 employee bonus incentive and non-certified candidates will receive a $1000.00 employee bonus incentive.

Lateral transfer is allowed for applicants who are currently Iowa certified peace officers in good standing. Starting wage for lateral transfers with more than two years post academy service is between $56,975.00-$62,697.00 based on training and experience.

Job Duties

The duty of Deputy Sheriff encompasses the widest variation of duties within the Marshall County Sheriff's Office. Under general supervision, he/she performs the responsible civil service work in the protection of life and property, investigation of crime, identification processing and the execution of all court processes assigned to the Sheriff’s Office. He/she has the job of dealing directly with the public during the tour of duty. Always being vigilant and on the alert for violations of laws and ordinance. Making every effort to prevent breaches of the peace and offenses against persons or property. This job requires job knowledge, technical skill, and the ability to work with the public.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Each deputy sheriff assigned this position, must be capable of performing the following duties:

Protect persons in immediate danger of injury or death by others.
Detect the commission of crimes, and act to apprehend suspects before there is any further damage or danger to the public.
Have a full capability of locating information and understanding the criminal code of the state of Iowa.
Investigate accidents with motor vehicles.
Investigate robberies, rapes, and crimes against persons.
Investigate burglaries, thefts, and any crimes against property.
Restore and maintain order with regard to family and personal domestic crisis in a variety of ways depending on the situation
May be required to give first aid to victims of injury or illness.
Initiate the filing of charges against suspected criminals by filing information’s, complaint forms, investigative reports, and criminal histories with the County Attorney’s Office and the Clerk of Court.
Execute arrest warrants by locating and physically taking custody of persons named in warrants, and transporting them to a detention facility.
Write detailed and accurate reports to document all activity by the deputy, including preliminary complaints, supplemental and follow-up investigations, and daily activity logs.
Expedite and serve legal documents, such as garnishments, writs of attachment, warrants, subpoena, summons, court orders, and others.
Restore order to civil disturbances.
Riot control.
Assist in disaster operations.
Assist motorists.
Direct traffic.
Escort prisoners to court or detention facility.
Assist in booking at the jail as described in Marshall County Jail policy and procedures.
Perform duties as required of them by the Sheriff and in accordance with Chapter 331.653 of the Iowa Code.

Job Qualifications

Applicants must be able to meet all minimum standards for acceptance into the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy; they must be 19 years of age to take the test and 21 years of age to be appointed as a deputy sheriff.

Lateral transfer is allowed for applicants who are currently Iowa certified peace officers in good standing.

MINIMUM STANDARDS FOR CANDIDATES FOR DEPUTY SHERIFF

The applicant must be a citizen of the United Sates and a resident of Iowa or intend to become a resident upon being employed. The applicant must be willing to reside withing 50 miles of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office.
The applicant has reached their twenty-first birthday and has not reached their sixtieth birthday at the time of appointment.
Is able to obtain a valid driver’s license at the time of application.
Is able to read and write the English language.
Is not addicted to drugs or alcohol.
Is of good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation, including a fingerprint search conducted of local, state and national fingerprint files and has not been convicted of a felony, or a crime involving moral turpitude.
Is not by reason of conscience or belief opposed to the use of force when appropriate or necessary to fulfill his or her duties.
A high school graduate with a diploma or possesses an equivalency certificate which meets the minimum score required by the State of Iowa as determined by the State Department of Public Instruction.
Has uncorrected vision of not less than 20-100 in either eye; correction to 20-20 and normal color vision.
Has normal hearing in each ear as determined by an examining physician.
Good physical, mental and emotional health.
Must be able to meet all minimum standards for acceptance into the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.
